World war I
In the early 20th century, countries started to make alliances, so they would not be attacked by other nations. The "Central Powers": Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy, and Turkey. The "Allied Powers": England, France, Russia, and the United States. World War I started in Europe from the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. In 1916, the re-election of Woodrow Wilson, he campaign promise was in neutrality. President Wilson broke the promise after the Zimmerman Telegram. Zimmerman Telegraph: Germany tried to get Mexico to attack the U.S. to get back ceded land. The official end of WWI was on 11/11/18 at 11:00 a.m. in Paris, called the Armistice. Afterwards, America put there trust in isolationism. When Germany surrendered, they went to depression, and Adolf Hitler came to power.
The great depression
On "Black Tuesday", on October 29. 1929, the stock market crashed. The cause of the Great Depression is from taking loans, downsizing workers, high tariffs, and lassez-fair. Most people lived in shacks or boxes called "Hooverville". At least one-fourth of Americans were out of work with thirteen million people unemployed. The Dust Bowl, or the Dirty Thirties, was an ecological and agricultural damage. Then, Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed the New Deal. The New Deal's purpose was to help economic recovery, relieve the unemployed suffering, and reform the defects in the economy. He created the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA), Social Security Administration, and etc.
World war ii
World War II helped Georgia's economy, because in Marietta, people were making B-29 bombers for the air force. The textile and factories had a different job, and they had to make war supplies, vehicles, and weapons. Since victory gardens were a success in the first World War, they used them again in the second World War. To help repay the soldiers, the government created the G.I. Bill, which is to help soldiers coming back from war adjust to civilian life, like college education and home loans. At Warner's Robbins Air force base in Macon, air mechanic were trained there, and they rebuilt thousand of aircraft. Although Americans wanted to stay out of war, President Roosevelt want to help out England. Emperor Hirohito ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor, and it lead the U.S. into war. The Allied Powers: U.S., England, and Soviet Union. The Axis Powers: Germany, Italy, and Japan. On August 15th, Emperor Hirohito surrendered after the U.S. attacked Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and General MacArthur controls Japan. Afterwards, the U.S. help reconstruct Japan economically.
