THE COTTON GIN
The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. It separates the cotton fiber and seeds with rollers, teeth, and brushes. In Augusta, there are factories full of cotton gins. The gin, in cotton gin, is short for engine. This invention quickly transformed cotton to be the "King" in the deep south. The cotton gin increased the southern society of slavery and plantation system.
RAILROADS

In the mid-1830s, Georgia's first railroad tracks lead from Athens, Augusta, Macon, and Savannah. Twenty-five years later, the state could claim more rail miles than anyone the deep south; it was connected to major towns and Atlanta was created as a new rail center. In 1836, the Western and Atlantic Railroads were chartered. Railroads continue to grow from the 1920s until the 1990s.
