JAMES OGLETHORPE
James Oglethorpe planned to establish the Georgia's colony. It was established in England in 1732. The British government authorized the establishment of its first new colony in North America. In early 1733, he made an expedition that led colonists in Savannah. He wanted to build a colony where people can repay their debts. He built the colony, because his friend, Robert Castell, died in debtors prison from the unsanitary conditions.
CHARTER OF 1732
On April 21, 1732, King George signed a document to establish the colony and create its own governing board. The charter was made by Trustees. The reason Georgia was founded for is charity, economics, and defense.
REASONS FOR SETTLEMENT (CHARITY, ECONOMICS, AND DEFENSE)
The most important reason for the founding of Georgia is defense, because it was a buffer zone to protect South Carolina from Spain in Florida.Economics, because of the natural resources for England would gain weath. They would produce rice, wine, indigo, and silk.Charity, because Debtors prison was filled with people who didn't need to be there.
TOMOCHICHI
Tomochichi was the chief of the Yamacraw Indians. He allowed James Oglethorpe to settle on present day Savannah. Tomochichi and Oglethorpe had a long lasting friendship. He sold the Yamacraw bluff to Oglethorpe for new settlement.
Mary Musgrove
Mary Musgrove was a translator between Tomochichi and Oglethorpe, and she had a business to be a trader.
THE CITY OF SAVANNAH
James Oglethorpe and colonist found Savannah in 1733. It is the oldest city in Georgia. It was part of the 13 colonies. It was the Yamacraw Bluff sold to Oglethorpe for new settlement.
