The head right system granted up to 1000 acres per family to settle. Families are entitled to 200 acres, and each family member are given 50 acres of land. This method help distribute land to each white male that counted as a "head" of a family and has the "right" to receive up to 1000 acres. The head right system resulted with a huge migration. In 1803, it was replaced by land lotteries.
LAND LOTTERIES
In 1803, Georgia adopted a new system where land was awarded by chance. When entering a land lottery, land varied from 50-500 acres. Free white men had only one chance, and widows and veterans had at least two chances when entering the land lotteries. This resulted major conflict with the Creeks and Cherokee Indians and the Yazoo Land Fraud.
